DAN HAMRICK 23 T ROADSTER DAN HAS OWNED THIS CAR FOR 21 YEARS, IT NOW RUNS IN THE 7.70 ET RANGE. DAN'S OPERATION IS SUPER DETAILED! |
CAR FACTSTHE CAR IS A 1962 PLYMOUTH SPORT FURY 2 DR HARDTOP. I BOUGHT THE CAR USED IN 1965 AT THE AGE OF 17 AND HAVE OWNED IT EVER SINCE. IT CAME WITH A 413 ENGINE WITH A 3 SPEED ON THE COLUMN. WHAT A RIDE FOR A TEENAGER. I LATER SWITCHED TO A 383CI / 343HP WITH A PUSH BUTTON TORQUEFLITE AND CAMPAIGNED THE CAR IN THE LATE 60'S IN F/SA. I HAD GREAT SUCESS LOCALLY BUT NEVER DID RUN MUCH ON THE DIVISION LEVEL.I RETIRED THE CAR IN THE MID 70'S BECAUSE THE LOCAL TRACK [GOLDEN TRIANGLE DRAGSTRIP] CLOSED AND I HAD BECOME VERY BUSY IN MY GENERAL CONTRACTING [THOMASON ENTERPRISES GENERAL CONTRACTORS] BUSINESS.IN THE MID 90'S I BEGAN TO GET THE BUG TO GO RACING AGAIN. I STARTED BY DECIDING TO RUN SUPERGAS AS I THOUGHT IT WAS A CLASS I COULD AFFORD TO COMPETE IN. I THOUGHT ABOUT MODIFYING THE PLYMOUTH BUT JUST COULDN'T BRING MYSELF TO START CHOPPING. I STARTED LOOKING IN NATIONAL DRAGSTER FOR A CAR [IT HAD TO BE A MOPAR]. WELL I LOOKED AT SEVERAL CARS AROUND THE COUNTRY BUT NONE OF THEM MEASURED UP.AFTER A LONG TRIP TO OHIO [I LIVE IN SOUTH EAST TEXAS ON THE GULF COAST] I CAME HOME AND STARTED TAKING OFF PARTS.I CONTACTED ART MORRISON ABOUT THE CHASSIS AFTER SEEING THEIR SUPERCAR ON DISPLAY AT A NATIONAL EVENT. AFTER A LOT OF MEASURING AND PHONE CALLS TO DAVE AT MORRISONS I HAD THE CHASSIS ON THE WAY.WHEN IT ARRIVED IT WAS INSTALLED BY LOCAL CHASSIS BUILDER RAYMOND SINGLETARY AND MYSELF.THE INTERIOR TIN WORK WAS BY DAVID HOWELL'S SHEET METAL.I KNEW I WANTED A STRONG AND RELIABLE ENGINE SO I AGAIN CONSULTED THE ADS IN ND FOR SOME IDEAS. I CHOSE KOFFEL'S PLACE IN OHIO FOR MY POWER.THANKS TO SCOTT, DAVE ,AND SUZIE KOFFEL I GOT EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED. WHEN IT WAS READY I TRAVELED BACK TO OHIO SO I COULD WATCH IT RUN ON THE DYNO AND BRING IT HOME.THEN IT WAS ON TO THE REST OF THE DRIVE TRAIN. AGAIN NATIONAL DRAGSTER CAME TO MY AID. I HAD NOTICED THAT A LOT OF THE RACERS AT THE TIME WERE HAVING TRANS BRAKE OR OUT AND OUT TRANSMISSION FAILURE. I SAW THE AD FOR BRUNO'S RACING TRANSMISSIONS AND GAVE BRUNO A CALL. THE BRUNO WAS MORE MONEY THAN THE GLIDES AT THE TIME BUT WHAT SOLD ME WAS WHEN I ASKED BRUNO WHAT THE LIFE SPAN AND THE NORMAL MAINTANANCE WAS. HE SAID IT WON'T BREAK ,AND IT NEVER HAS! THE REAR AXLE IS A DANA 60 BY PYLE BROTHERS IN BAYTOWN TX. THE DRIVE SHAFT WAS A EMPIRE DRAFTSHAFT UNIT.WELL AFTER MANY HOURS OF WORK WE WERE OFF FOR THE FIRST TEST RUNS. I DIDN'T KNOW A DELAY BOX FROM A FLOWER POT BUT I THOUGHT I WAS READY. I STAGED THE CAR AND WAITED FOR THE AMBER. I SAW IT ,LIFTED THE TRANSBRAKE BUTTON, WHEN IT LAUNCHED I THOUGHT THE CAR BEHIND ME HAD RAMMED ME!!!!! I LIFTED ,RAN THROUGH AT 11.SOMETHING[NEARLY A SECOND FASTER THAN I HAD EVER BEEN] GOT BACK TO THE TRAILER STILL SHAKING AND ALL I COULD SAY WAS WOW!I RAN THE CAR IN DIVISION 4 SUPER GAS EVENTS FROM 1998 THRU 2002 AS WELL AS BRACKET RACING AT MY HOME TRACK ,HOUSTON RACEWAY PARK. I DIDN'T HAVE MUCH SUCCESS IN SUPERGAS AGAINST THE W.M.D'S IN DIVISION 4. I FINNALY REALIZED THAT THE CAR WAS TOO LONG AND TOO HEAVY FOR SUPER GAS SO IN 2003 I STARTED CONCENTRATING ON BRACKET RACING AT HRP. THAT DISISION REALLY PAYED OFF IN OCT,2004 AS I WON THE DIVISION 4 SUPER PRO FINAL AND OUT RAN THE PRO CHAMP FOR THE TRIP TO POMONA ,CA.THIS WIN WAS MADE POSSIBLE BY THE OUTSTANDING HELP AND SUPPORT OF MY WIFE AND CREW MEMBER, CLAIRE AS WELL AS MY LONG TIME FRIENDS DANNY ROCCAFORTE,RAYMOND SINGLETARY, FRANK GLEASON,AL JUDICE AND JOHN RUSSELL.
